Happy New Year to you, citizen of Surfpop! So much has happened over the last year in our Surfpop family. Stoked to share some of our highlights of 2018 and take you along our journey in changing lives through surfing, education and more! We are amped and ready for 2019.

The stoke is real! In November all the children got new custom shaped surfboards. A big shout out to our business sponsor Importers Coffee, and to the talented shapers at Lifestyle Surfshop. Keen to be a business sponsor too? We are always open for cool and new partnerships. Don't be shy, get in touch! Thabo (9 years): "My board is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. I dream about it every night."
To optimise our programme, we introduced the Surfpop theory of change and monitoring tool in 2018 to carefully track the outputs, outcomes and impact of what we do. With the tool we track the progress per child on their surfing and fitness, school performance, life skills and psychosocial well-being. We collected the first set of data at the end of 2018, complemented by insights dating back to the start of Surfpop in 2015. We cannot wait to share the Surfpop Annual Report 2018 with you in the coming months. 
In October, we boosted our after-school education classes by launching Khan Academy, a globally recognised developer of online education courses. With Khan we have designed our own digital Maths and English courses, tailored to the local curriculum and learning level of our learners. These courses do not only make learning fun and improve our learner's knowledge on the subject matter, but also boost their computer savviness. A big thanks to those who donated a laptop! It is our dream to grow our Surfpop family and create long-lasting opportunities for even more children from Masiphumelele and Ocean View through our powerful formula of surfing and education. Surf development promotes the physical and psychosocial well-being of our beneficiaries, and combined with focused after-school education and nutritious meals, improves their school outcomes, prepares them for sustainable employment and promotes their role as ambassadors for positive change in their communities.

We want to say a big thank you to our business partners Importers Coffee, Temple of Reason, VML and DermAfrica for their generous contributions. Also, a shoutout to everyone who contributed their time and skills, who gifted surfboards, laptops, wetsuits or other equipment, who made a financial contribution, and who raised funds for us.
